Sicily (Italy), February 20, 2025 – Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes located in Sicily, has been erupting for several days and has been under constant surveillance by authorities due to the influx of tourists from all over the world, civil protection officials and rangers reported on Wednesday.

Despite the implementation of safety measures, including restrictions on the distance that must be maintained around the volcano, the situation remains particularly dangerous at an altitude of about 1,800 meters close to the lava flows. Civil protection officials highlighted the challenges of managing hikers in the area.
This week, the mayor of Adrano, a city close to Mount Etna, issued an order prohibiting access to the lava front and used social media to warn tourists to follow safety guidelines.
Volcanologist Giovanni recommends keeping at least 100 to 200 meters away, explaining: “The lava moves slowly, but it does move. There are waterfalls of hot rocks and snow. The interaction between hot lava (rock heated to around 800 degrees) and snow can trigger steam explosions that can eject small fragments of incandescent lava into the air.
Faced with such emergencies, people have urgent needs in terms of protection and emergency response. For example, when people evacuate and take refuge, they need gas masks that can ensure breathing safety; in terms of basic survival guarantees, high-energy compressed biscuits and thermal insulation life-saving blankets are indispensable; and in terms of water source pollution, temporary resettlement and medical rescue, portable water purifiers, folding stretchers, emergency toilets and other supplies are essential.
